HAEMORRHOIDS, generally known as Piles, are inflamented blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum.  The Hemorrhoids veins are located in the lowest part of the rectum and the anus.  Sometimes the swell so that the vein walls are stretched, thin, and irritated by passing bowel movements.  Piles is classified into two main categories Internal and External.

They are very common with about 50% of people experiencing them at some time in their life.  However, they are usually more common in elderly people and amongst pregnant women.  The external abdominal pressure causes the veins to swell.  The pressure can be caused by obesity, pregnancy standing and sitting for a long period of time straining in the toilet, coughing, sneezing, vomiting and holding your breath while straining to do some physical labour.

Diet has important role in causing and preventing piles.  People who consistently eat a high fiber are less likely to get piles and those who prefer diet high in processed food are to the greater risk to contact the piles.

In low fiber diet or inadequate fluid intake can cause to constipation which further contribute to hemorrhoids.

There are several types of hemorrhoids:-  Internal, External within four different grades.

  3. Bright red blood is visible after a bowel movement.
  4. The area around the anus is itchy, red, and sore.
  5. Hemorrhoids are graded on a scale from I to IV. At grades III or IV, surgery may be necessary.
  6. Pain occurs during the passing of a stool.
